Industrial tags may accumulate dust, oil, residue or other contamination. Material covering part of the code can reduce readability even when the underlying marking remains intact.

7. Camera and Scanner Capability

Smartphones, handheld barcode scanners and industrial readers do not all have identical optics, focusing capability or decoding performance.

A tag should ideally be evaluated using equipment representative of the intended application.

A Practical First Check

If a metal QR code does not scan reliably, first check whether:

  • The complete QR code is visible and unobstructed
  • The surface is clean
  • Strong glare is present
  • The camera can focus clearly on the code
  • The code scans at a closer distance
  • A modest change in viewing angle improves readability
  • The tag has significant scratches or physical damage

These checks can identify obvious environmental or viewing issues without changing the tag design.
